Brodie Park arboretum, Paisley
I didn't know what an arboretum was until today when I learned that it is a name for a collection of different trees. One of the things I found out was that all trees have Latin names as well as the names we know them by. The Latin names are hard to read and it is even harder to say them and they some have funny names. Like Downy Birch but I thought it said Downy Bitch, hehe. I thought it was funny because its a strange name.
Also found out the fruit and nuts come from trees even in this cold country. The collection had 15 different trees that are all native to Scotland some I have heard of some I haven't. The trees were planted in a park with lots of space between them so they can grow. This is because some can grow over 30m tall and live over 1000 years too. Every tree has a different shape of the tree and leaves., this helps you identify what species they are. Not all trees are green and brown too. I saw green, brown, red, grey and white as it all depends of the type of tree and time of year.
I also found out that these trees were not just planted by one person or group like the council. This project took 4 different groups of people to join forces and to donate money together just to plant 15 trees. They were planted in a local park so that the whole community can enjoy the benefits of them and learn about these different native Scottish trees.
