This week saw Junkitecture run a series of public workshops hosted by MakLab in the Lighthouse. The projects were focused on using reclaimed materials (donated by Barr construction) that would otherwise have been destined for a landfill, and teaching members of the public how such materials could be used to create various objects such as pieces of furniture. Junkitecture is the creation of Xanthe Davies and Joseph Grehan, who hope that workshops such as these will act as a pilot in paving the way for community deposits being set up which would allow construction materials that are no longer needed by the companies being reclaimed by enthusiasts who wish to reuse and recycle the materials. The workshops ran over several days with the overall goal of building an outdoor shelter complete with roof and seating area, all made from recycled materials. Those attending the workshops were also shown how items such as chairs could be easily made using an array of different materials.
